Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa

OUR HISTORY

     Beta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa in Fannin County, Georgia was organized on April 30, 1977 with the following charter members: Laura Abernathy, Mary Ashley, Laverne Cobb, Joan Davenport, Essie Dilbeck, Dorothy Fordham, Rebecca Hampton, Lola Haren, Ethelene Jones, Mary Louise Landrum, Lillian Mull, Olivia Owenby, Joan Queen, Barbara Smith, Juanita Smith, and Glenda Stamey.  Joining the charter members as transfers from the Beta Delta chapter, Blairsville, Georgia, the sponsor of Beta Upsion, were the following five additional members:  Vickie Clement, Eva Daves, Ruth Daves, Berma Doty and Barbara Nichols.  Assisting in the organizational meeting were Ella Faye Byers of the Beta Delta Chapter and Mattie Lou Strain, State Membership and Expansion Chairman, and Alice Haney of Calhoun, Georgia.

     Officers elected for the newly organized Beta Upsion were:  Juanita Smith, President; Laura Abernathy, Vice-President; Barbara Smith, Recording Secretary; Barbara Nichols, Corresonding Secretary; Joan Queen, Treasurer; Ethelene Jones, Historian; Mary Ashley, Chaplain; Mary Louise Landrum, Seargeant-at-Arms; and Ruth Daves, Pledge Chairman.  These officers served for the 1977-78 year.

     Beta Upsilon was affiliated with the Athens District of Alpha Delta Kappa until a geographical realignment put the local chapter with the Dalton District.

     In 2013, Beta Upsilon, held a Sapphire celebration for Laverne Cobb.  Currently, she is the only charter member still active with Beta Upsilon.  Mary Louise Landrum, also a charter sister, is recognized as a limited member.
